Video projectors and plasma screens can be used to show videos and DVD's, and increasingly, display hymn lyrics using either Powerpoint or specialist software. Interestingly, as a direct result of the soon-to-be-introduced UK ban on smoking in public places, weatherproof and damage-proof outdoor screens are now available. These could be coupled with a digital signage program to give you a continually moving and updated 24hr noticeboard outside your premises.
Most places of worship now have sound reinforcement systems, and with the Disability Discrimination Act in mind, hearing loop systems (also known as AFILS) are being provided for the hard-of-hearing. The Act compels all public buildings to make “reasonable adjustments” to ensure easy access for disabled people, and fitting an induction loop is one of the most effective things a church can do to make its services accessible. More and more people in our society suffer some sort of hearing loss, especially amongst the elderly. A loop will become a more and more valuable asset as the years go by. Legalities aside, it is important that your church is seen to be extending a welcome to the hearing impaired.
